Science Cover Letter

Snapshot for the Science family (Science, Science Advances, Science Translational Medicine, Science Signaling, Science Immunology, Science Robotics). Cover letter expectations parallel Nature; the bar for "broad significance" is comparable.

Tone

• One-step beyond Nature in significance framing: the work must matter for a general scientific audience, not just a subfield.
• Confident, specific, no marketing adjectives.

Opening

• State the central advance in the first sentence. The advance, not the topic.
• Identify the broader scientific question that motivates the work in one clause.

Contribution Framing

• One or two sentences naming what was done.
• One or two sentences naming the headline result with a concrete quantitative anchor that traces to the manuscript.
• One sentence naming what this enables that was previously not possible.

Journal Fit

• Reference Science's editorial priority on broad reach. Connect this work to that.
• If the work is more specialized (e.g., chemistry methodology), Science Advances may be a better target — flag this honestly rather than overstretching.

Declarations (Required for Science)

• Originality and exclusivity statements.
• Competing interests: explicit declaration even when "none."
• AI disclosure: Science (AAAS) is the strictest tier here — generative-AI assistance must be disclosed in the cover letter, the acknowledgments, and Methods (Methods carries the full prompt, tool name, and version). State it in the letter even when the use was minor.

Conditional declarations (include only when relevant)

• Data and materials availability: required for all Science submissions, but supplied through the submission system and a manuscript statement; cite it in the letter only if the editor requests it.
• IRB / IACUC approval for studies involving humans or animals (usually a manuscript statement; mention here if it materially affects editorial routing).
• Suggested / excluded reviewers: only if the submission form does not already collect them; not added by default (2025-26 venues have tightened author-suggested reviewers).

Length

• Hard ceiling: 350 words.

Common Desk-Reject Triggers

• "Significant" or "important" used as adjectives without a comparator.
• Specialist work pitched to Science when Science Advances is a better fit.
• Missing data-availability statement (Science requires it explicitly).
