Nature (Family) Cover Letter

Snapshot for the Nature family of journals (Nature, Nature Communications, Nature Methods, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Medicine, ...). Specific sister journals (Nature Medicine, Nature Methods) have stronger expectations on the translational or methodological pitch; refer to references/JOURNAL_TIERS.md and the venue-specific public author guidelines before sending.

Tone

• Confident but specific: "Our findings demonstrate X, which directly addresses Y," never "we believe this is novel."
• One sentence per paragraph carries the load; the rest is evidence.
• No marketing language. Editors at this tier read 50+ letters a week and discount adjectives.

Opening

• First sentence states the manuscript's central finding and why a broad scientific audience cares.
• Do not open with "We are pleased to submit..." — editors mark it as a low-effort letter.
• Name the manuscript title and article type explicitly in the first paragraph.

Contribution Framing

• Three short sentences maximum on what was done.
• One quantitative result that anchors the contribution (must also appear in the manuscript).
• One sentence on what now becomes possible because of the result.

Journal Fit

• Two to three sentences explaining why this manuscript belongs in this specific Nature title and not a sister journal.
• If possible, cite a recent paper from the same journal that this work directly extends or contradicts.
• Avoid generic statements about "broad readership" — name the specific reader profile.

Declarations (Required for Nature)

• Originality: "This manuscript has not been published elsewhere and is not under concurrent consideration."
• Dual-submission: "All authors have approved the submission."
• Competing interests: state explicitly, even when "none."
• AI disclosure: if generative AI assisted the preparation of the manuscript or this letter, state which tool and how it was used. ICMJE (Jan 2026, Section V) requires AI use to be described in the cover letter and the manuscript; the Nature family additionally records LLM use in Methods. Pure grammar/spell-check is exempt.

Conditional declarations (include only when relevant)

• Data availability: Nature routes data/code availability through the submission system and a manuscript statement, not the cover letter — include it here only if the editor specifically asks. State where data and code will be accessible upon acceptance.
• Suggested / excluded reviewers: include only if the journal's submission form does not already collect them, or to flag a genuine conflict. Several venues have curtailed author-suggested reviewers (2025-26); never add them by default.
• Confidential channel: the Nature cover letter is not shown to reviewers. Use it for confidential context — competing interests, related work under consideration, or a request for specific editorial handling — rather than restating the abstract.

Length

• Hard ceiling: 350 words.
• The letter should fit on one page (10-11pt) with the address block, sign-off, and signature.

Common Desk-Reject Triggers

• Translational language not supported by manuscript evidence (especially Nature Medicine — Mitigation: align with references/CLAIM_EVIDENCE_CONTRACT.md before submission).
• Pure-biology submission to Nature Medicine without a human-disease bridge.
• Methodological paper without a clearly named advance.
• Cover letter that repeats the abstract verbatim.
